Laut Richard Huddy, Developer Relations Manager bei AMD, wird es von DirectX 10 nach dem Update auf Version 10.1 keine weiteren Versionen geben. Microsoft wird sich statt dessen auf die Entwicklung von DirectX 11 beschränken. DirectXDirectX Damit können sich die Grafikchip-Hersteller darauf konzentrieren, die Leistung ihrer Produkte zu verbessern, anstatt zusätzlich neue Features einbauen zu müssen. DirectX 10.1 wird mit dem ersten Servicepack für Windows Vista im ersten Quartal 2008 erwartet. Für DirectX 11 gibt es noch keinen Zeitplan, man geht allgemein jedoch davon aus, dass die Entwicklung einige Jahre dauern wird.
